Author of over 30 books for children and young adults. Thirteen of which are in the popular Go Girl series and the award winning Whisper. Christine lives in St Kilda with her husband, 3 children who are stubbornly refusing to stay young and an opinionated Maltese Shih tzu called Gidget. On the series Penelope Perfect (for kids 6 – 11)
About a year and a half ago, I was having coffee with Hilary Rogers, Publishing Director at Hardie Grant Egmont, and chatting about the sorts of issues kids are grappling with. The one that popped up most was anxiety. There are loadsof brash, mouthy characters in children’s literature. But the Lisa Simpsons and the Hermione Grangers seemed always to be the sidekick. Not any more.
Penelope Kingston stands centre stage in my new series, Penelope Perfect.
She is anxious and over achieving, but also kind and funny. The first book, Project Best Friend, came out in Feb 2015. The second, Very Private List for Camp Success was published in July 2015 and the third, Lucky Jarsand broken promises launched in December 2015.
These books are already resonating with readers and the series has sold into Simon and Schuster, New York as well as Canada and the Czech Republic. Kid’s critique Penelope’s antics and very much enjoy reading about regular life experiences and how Penelope handles (or doesn’t handle – she is prone to an outburst or two) them. I adore this character. Which is lucky, because the series has already been extended from four books to six.
